Welcome to our Q&A session, where you’ll get to know the faces behind the numbers! Today, we’re spotlighting one of our amazing team members. From tax tips to office quirks, get ready for a fun dive into the life of one of our members of staff, expert Bookkeeper Lynn Marshall.
Q: Welcome, Lynn, to kick things off, can you tell us how long you’ve been with Porter Garland?
A: Hi! I’ve been with Porter Garland for nearly 4 years now. Time flies when you’re having fun with numbers!
Q: What’s one thing about working in accountancy that might surprise people?
A: We’re not all boring & dull! 😂
Q: How do you have fun in your spare time?
A: I play netball twice a week – not in leagues, just for fun and the social side of it. It’s really good fun with a great bunch of ladies, ranging in ages from 19 to 59! I usually play centre…the little one who dashes around like a headless chicken!
As a family, we are Reading FC season ticket holders and attend all home matches. Reading FC have had a bit of a hard time in the last few years with their ownership, fingers crossed that the new owner in the pipeline works out well for the club.
I also love going to the theatre to watch musicals, walking my dog (Mollie the Collie), going away for weekends in our touring caravan, spending time with the family and going to watch live music. Quite often the last two overlap I often watch my husband and son play in a ukulele group called The Mighty Lemons. They are an 8-piece band that play rock & pop covers…just with smaller instruments! My husband plays ukulele bass and my son is the drummer, and they did try to recruit Amanda to perform a song with them at a beer festival…but she says she’d forgotten about that!!!
Q: If you weren’t a bookkeeper, what would you be doing?
A: Um, that’s a tricky one! I love animals and I think working in a wildlife rescue would be so rewarding.
Q: What’s the best piece of financial advice you’ve ever received?
A: Never talk about finances just before bedtime! (given by the vicar when I got married!)
Q: How do you unwind after a busy tax season?
A: As a bookkeeper, I have a busy month every month as I have monthly VAT return deadlines. After those, I then tend to spend a day or two catching up on other work, training, admin, etc, before I’m off again on the next round of VAT returns.
Q: Can you share one of your funniest moments at Porter Garland?
A: There haven’t been any…only joking! Um, unveiling my Christmas Jumper last year and winning, but I’m not telling you how I decorated my Christmas Jumper!😉
Thanks for sharing, Lynn! We love having your expertise and energy around the office.
